Healthy Anxiety Management
Living with Anxiety
Living with anxiety can be a colossal challenge. Daily tasks become more of a struggle and minor problems are amplified. Doubts and fear cloud your mind; worries abound. Thankfully, there are several ways in which you can manage your anxiety that will help you live a life free of unnecessary worry and fear.
The first step to managing anxiety is simply being aware that it exists. When a thought or idea starts to overwhelm you, acknowledge the key role it is playing in how big that idea seems.
Secondly, be aware of how you feel in your physical body. Focus on where exactly you feel any uncomfortable sensation, and try to notice if it moves as you focus on it. Is it manifesting as something such as a headache or sweating? Are you jittery or clenching your jaw? Sometimes focusing on the feeling rather than trying to ignore it can help alleviate its intensity.
Redirect Anxious Energy
Once you’ve got a grasp on acknowledging how your anxiety affects you, you can take further steps to manage it on a continual basis. When you’re in a moment of anxiousness, try to redirect your thoughts. No matter what thought you’re stuck on, pause, take a breath, and say something calming to yourself. Some options you can consider are:
- Every breath I inhale calms me and every breath I exhale takes away tension
- I acknowledge that the only constant in life is change and am prepared for it
- This too shall pass
