6 Tips for Avoiding the Flu (And Flu Shot) this Season

‘Tis the Season for Avoiding the Flu

No one likes to be sick, especially with the flu. The aches and pains, fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and other symptoms, along with the knowledge that the flu is highly contagious, is enough to scare millions of people into getting the flu shot each year. If you’ve been watching your local news, you’re probably already hearing about all of the reasons you should get the shot, and all of the places you can find it in your town. Of course, there are other ways of avoiding the flu.

Flu Shot Alternatives

At Long Natural Health, we recommend considering alternatives to the flu shot when approaching flu season. These highly controversial vaccines do not make a lot of sense based on the evidence. We don’t recommend them. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that flu vaccine effectiveness varies from person to person, and is only 60% effective in the population, a number that drops significantly for the elderly and others with immune systems that are weakened.

Do the seasonal flu vaccines still contain thimerosal (mercury)?

Thimerosal, a mercury derivative, is still used in the large batches of flu vaccines. According to the CDC, “The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved several formulations of the seasonal flu vaccine, including multi-dose vials and single-dose units. (See Table of Approved Influenza Vaccines for the U.S.) Since seasonal influenza vaccine is produced in large quantities for annual vaccination campaigns, some of the vaccine is produced in multi-dose vials, and contains thimerosal to safeguard against possible contamination of the vial once it is opened.”

Despite the influence of western medicine and the media, if you are interested in a natural approach to wellness this fall and winter season, here are 6 tips for staying healthy and avoiding colds and flu:

  1. Have effective methods for coping with stress
  2. Exercise regularly
  3. Wash your hands!
  4. Stay hydrated
  5. Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze
  6. Boost your immune system naturally with supplementation, especially increasing your vitamin D intake; we recommend both vitamin D and Del Immune throughout the cold and flu season as the best preventative.
